In one of the recent newsletters we discussed mindsets. Your mindset on selling is nearly always going to be a big limitation for getting sales training.
Here’s the biggest limiting mindset that prevents rapid profit improvement in a business…
“I’m not a salesperson, I just talk to people”
You can substitute ‘talk’ in the last sentence with ‘do quotes for’ and it would be the same statement.
This all-too-common mindset is the exact reason why you and your team would benefit from sales training.
Here’s another big reason why you would benefit… because you’ve probably never had it!
If you (and all your staff who talk to potential or existing customers) have never had sales training… what a fantastic opportunity! That’s another reason why it’s the TOP Strategy.
Selling is 95% rapport building skills and 5% knowing how to sell.
Some people are good at building rapport, but the levels go way beyond “good”!
The reason why is because you always have two sales to make… not one. A simple way of explaining this is to use this analogy…
There is the MESSAGE and the MESSENGER.
Customers are extremely quick to make assumptions. They can judge a person in five seconds… and from that point look for evidence to support that point of view.
For example, have you ever called up a business for the first time and after listening to the person who answered the phone thought to yourself, ‘this person doesn’t sound friendly / helpful / interested’ etc? (Substitute any word in the space)
That’s an example of assumptions/judgements.
Notice how fast you make the assumption about the person and from that moment on the likelihood of you buying from that business drops significantly and rapidly.
This is what I mean by the MESSENGER. The message is what you are selling at the time.
Here’s a critical fact…
“People buy from people they relate to”
This introduces the most powerful aspect of selling there is: DISC Profiles.
In the Team Building newsletter (Step Two of the Seven Steps) you would have read about DISC profiles. DISC is a tool used to describe the emphasis everyone puts on a particular type of behavior. All people are a combination of the four profiles but we prefer and emphasise one, or for some people two, major one/s.
In case you’re wondering, D stands for Dominant, I for Influence, S for Steady and C for Compliant. DISC was discovered in a similar form over 2,400 years ago, so it’s the most credible of all personality describing tools in existence.
DISC Profile knowledge gives us fantastic insights into how we relate to people, especially in sales situations; some people are friendly, others don’t see a need for it. Some people like to think about information and their decisions over days and others make decisions fast.
As we all buy from people we relate to, that means we relate to one of the DISC Profiles only; or 25% of the population only. That means we can be actually quite irritating to 75% of people just by being ourselves!
As a MESSENGER of what you sell (the message), you’re irritating 75% of people who might buy from you. And you don’t like to buy from people who irritate you… do you?
Sales training is about getting you and your personality out of the way as the number one reason why people won’t buy from you. This is the same with your staff. They irritate people too. Everyone does.
Imagine if you stopped irritating people and instead did the opposite, built rapport (using DISC Profile insights) with people by knowing who you needed to BE, so you behaved (spoke) similarly to your potential customer. Your sales would soar!
I once worked with a client who learned DISC profiles intensely from me (back in 1998 when I didn’t know it half as well as now) and in one month his conversion rate went from 25% (a typically low figure in service businesses) to 75% in a month.
What this meant in dollars was that his monthly turnover of $30,000 just tripled to $90,000+… in just thirity days!
This is why sales training is the BEST strategy for any business where you and your staff talk to people to win sales face to face or over the phone, or when doing quotes. Selling is just talking to people so you don’t create objections so people buy based on the Message.
Furthermore, I could give you dozens of examples where ordinary business owners and their staff have done our sales training and then saw an amazing, and often rapidly profitable increase in just days to weeks.
