There are some challenges company owners have with SEO service providers, and for good reason...
Marketing service providers, and especially SEO service providers, don't believe in educating their clients. They believe keeping clients ignorant is a better policy.
SEO progress reports business owners receive are confusing. That's what they say when asked. They assume, hope and/or guess that the SEO service is worthwhile, but aren't sure, until many months later.
This is a major challenge with SEO. It doesn't matter if all the reports show an improvement in rank if leads and especially sales don't increase. Sales are what are needed to pay for all marketing services.
Let's explore a few myths and facts of SEO and increasing leads
This is the most common claim with SEO service providers. It can sound like a good promise, until you learn more, and realise getting on page 1 for non-competitive phrases is easy.
It's all too hard to explain how Google works. Google keeps changing everything to do with SEO all the time and it's impossible to keep up with unless you're a full time SEO expert.
More traffic doesn't mean your business will receive more leads and sales. A lot of website traffic is from people who never intend to contact a business.
There are keywords your site can rank for that don't relate to people buying. The keywords you rank for are important if you want sales.
There are aspects of SEO that haven't changed and never will. Google's key focus is to rank sites based on their popularity. How it defines popularity has changed.
20+ YEARS IN SEO
Measuring needs to be the first step of all marketing. Google Search Console is a great free tool that reveals the facts about all organic search traffic to your website.
Tracking leads by lead sources, to sales by lead sources is discussed, with a powerful, free tool supplied that you can use.
You'll assist with identifying your best keyword phrases to use on your website during the website optimisation. Without your industry knowledge SEO work is pure guesswork.
Improvements to your website in the first month will be seen in reports and facts, so you know the work has been effective.
There is also no 'lock-in contract' to sign - you can stop any time with 30 days notice.

MY SEO BACKGROUND STORY
I was first introduced to the topic of SEO in 2001, by a colleague who could rank for positions 1, 2 or 3. He surprised me by stating...
"More people buy from the 3rd position website"
That intrigued me and I wanted to learn more because I'm a fanatic researcher at heart.
The idea of using know-how about Google to rank higher in search results, to increase traffic and leads was exciting.
I had to learn more about this but soon after my colleague disappeared and no one I knew ever heard from him again.
With my interest peaked, by my SEO colleague, I had to know more because I wanted my business website to rank higher.
So I searched for SEO service providers, found one that looked promising and called them to discuss my business.
I engaged them on a monthly service because this was before the industry went to 6 and 12 month 'lock-in' contractors, and they started to do their work.
My ranking positions went from 30+ to being around positions 18 to 22. It was good, but that was as far as the SEO consultant could get my site over a few months.
Brad Callen, for those who've been around SEO for over a decade, was the real life guru of SEO. His methods were demonstrated by ranking No. 1 for "SEO software" as well as "SEO keywords."
Of course, I had to buy his software that did all sorts of amazing things, such as tracking the search rank for any phrase or for any web page. It was awesome and saved huge amounts of time.
SEO Elite was fantastic, it taught me how long Google took to re-rank a web page after the Title was changed, plus any other changes made to a web page such as text or images.
The time Google takes to re-rank the page hasn't changed in over 18 years, which is about 1 to 2 weeks, depending on how big the changes are.
'On-page' SEO is everything related to changing a website, to have it generate more traffic, leads and/or sales.
'Off-page' SEO is all the work that is carried out to improve the SEO of a website, that isn't carried out on the actual website.
Websites are nowhere near as well "optimised" as their owners think they are.
That's my honest opinion based on almost three decades of designing, implementing and measuring results of thousands of advertising and marketing strategies with thousands of businesses.
Every website can be improved to increase traffic, leads and the sales that they generate.
Sales being with marketing, not in the verbal sense when a prospect calls a business.
Great increases in sales can be achieved by better marketing, and these days, a website is the foundation and hub of virtually all marketing. So that's a great place to being SEO with 'On-page work.
That's what everyone wants to know!
After 20+ years of research, looking at the measured results of SEO strategies, the truth is that results can be seen in weeks - as you can see in the video above.
It also depends what we're talking about and is defined by "results."
A website is NOT going have phrases improve in rank from position 25 to position 5 in a month. Sorry, that isn't happening.
What can be seen, using the most overlooked marketing tool - Google Search Console, is that the number of Impressions (appearance of your website somewhere in a search result), and number of Clicks (website visitors) can significantly increase in two to four weeks.
By how much?
20% to 50% more Impressions and Clicks are quite common - in the first month.
Will that increase the number of leads and sales to your business in the first month?
Sometimes it does yes, but not every time for every business.
Google is a bit slow to recognise a lot of changes to website pages. It will respond super fast to blog posts, with the response time to index a new one, and potentially rank in the top 20 or top 10 within 20 to 30 minutes for low competition phrases.
A new web page can take a couple of days to a week or two for Google to respond to index it, depending on how big and how many changes are made and how often Google's spiders visit your website.
Off-page SEO is what is carried out to boost the rank position in search results, off the website.
That includes links from other websites.
These other websites need to have "authority" in Google's eyes.
What authority means is debatable in SEO circles. It's what has taken me over a decade to work out through constant reading, studying and testing on my own website.
These authority websites are used to obtain a link to your website.
These links can be in images or as text. The links need to be clickable, which means when you hover over the text or image you can click on it with your mouse and you end up on one of your web pages.
The science of choosing which authority websites to obtain links from is the real skill of SEO. This is what takes many years to fully understand because there are dozens of "traps" for the uneducated and under experienced SEO provider.
How does one learn what is a good website to obtain a link from and to avoid the many traps?
There are dozens of traps with links, with many including "penalties" from Google, that you don't know about unless you're constantly checking where your website ranks for dozens of phrases.
A Google penalty means the rank position of multiple phrases related to a page or pages drops significantly.
This was learned the hard way after obtaining links and then experiencing what a penalty is.
Like all things in life, it's easy when you know how, but the know-how can be painful and costly to obtain.
If you're considering SEO for your business, talk to someone with years and years of experience, who has tested their knowledge on their own website.
You don't want someone with SEO who is experimenting on your site.
